As Hurricane Milton Brushes Yucatán, Heifer International Urges Focus on Smallholder Farmer Resilience

As the ferocious storm Hurricane Milton circulated near Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Heifer International urges attention to resilience building for smallholder farmers ahead and in the wake of extreme weather events.

Set to make landfall on Florida’s western coast as a Category 4 hurricane, Milton’s circulation near Mexico is expected to bring intense rains, wind gusts of up to 200 km/h, waves of 6 to 8 meters and the possible formation of waterspouts in the north of Quintana Roo and Yucatan, Mexico.

"Tropical storms and cyclones are becoming more and more destructive in Mexico, which has experienced both more frequent and more severe weather events over the last 15 years,” said Gustavo Maldonado, Heifer Mexico country director. “Mexico's millions of smallholder farmers are especially vulnerable, with crop losses driving up both food insecurity and poverty.”

"This is why it is vital to build long-term resilience within small-scale agriculture on an ongoing basis,” he said. “For example, Heifer Mexico works with a group of farmers in the Yucatán peninsula to preserve seeds of the most climate-resilient indigenous crops so that the next harvest is hardier and less susceptible to loss and damage. We also work with farmers to diversify their crops and livestock production, so their entire incomes are not at risk. But as climate change intensifies, these efforts need to be scaled up urgently to escape the cycle of destruction and recovery."
