TEGUCIGALPA / LITTLE ROCK – Dec. 9, 2024 – In the wake of Tropical Storm Sara’s landfall over Honduras, Heifer International is working with local partners to assess the damage and deliver a comprehensive emergency response and rehabilitation plan to support immediate recovery needs and build longer-term resilience for affected farming families.

Tropical Storm Sara’s deep trail of devastation along the coast and northern region of Honduras has severely affected the departments of Yoro, Atlántida and Colón. Millions of dollars in losses in infrastructure, housing and livelihoods have generated a crisis that demands immediate action. The main damage reported includes destroyed bridges, impassable access roads and overflowing rivers, affecting livestock and agriculture, and further complicating the situation for thousands of families.

Heifer Honduras collected firsthand information on the loss of livestock, crops and damage to the farms of project participants. These include:

  • 1,846 families affected
  • 114 families displaced
  • More than 4,470 hectares of crops lost — including basic grains, vegetables and other products
  • 1,367 cows lost and 128 beehives destroyed
  • 446,470 liters of milk were not delivered to the industry.

Faced with this crisis, Heifer Honduras has decided to act with a two-phase response plan: (1) Emergency and (2) Reconstruction and Rehabilitation.

Phase 1: Emergency

Although Heifer Honduras is not a humanitarian aid agency, it is an organization dedicated to sustainable development. In this context it has decided to provide immediate humanitarian support to 1,500 affected families valued at USD $130,000, delivering basic food kits, personal hygiene items and essential medicines.

This support will benefit both families participating in Heifer's projects and those outside of the program, guaranteeing immediate relief for households with an average of four members, and covering their needs for one week.

Phase 2: Reconstruction and Rehabilitation

Looking ahead, Heifer Honduras is redesigning the Leveraging Success livestock project to incorporate measures that will enable the recovery and resilience of communities. This effort will include:

  • Technical assistance to improve production practices.
  • Support in the acquisition of cows, electric fences, milking parlors and others.
  • Design of risk and resilience plans for affected farms.

With this strategy, Heifer seeks not only to address immediate needs, but also to lay the groundwork for locally-led sustainable development that protects and strengthens livelihoods in the long-term.
