2024: The Year in Pictures

By Heifer International

December 8, 2024

The year 2024 was marked by smallholder farmers and their communities overcoming challenges with bold solutions to reshape the future. Together with governments, businesses, local organizations and dedicated supporters, our global community worked across 19 countries to reimagine food systems, ignite economic growth and care for the Earth we all depend on. Below are some of our favorite photos that defined this year.

Technology & Innovation

Smallholder dairy farmers in Uganda stepped up to tackle milk spoilage, adopting solar-powered chilling technology at several milk collection centers. This simple yet transformative solution reduced waste, cut energy costs and strengthened dairy value chains to create more sustainable farming systems.

Food Security

In Odisha, India, Budhini Hansdah turned barren plots of land into vegetable gardens filled with fresh, nutritious food. The harvests kept her family fed and the surplus brought in income, turning her once-empty farm into a lifeline of nourishment and stability.

Youth Empowerment

In Ethiopia, young changemaker Samson Alemu invented a biofertilizer from organic waste that restores soil health and reduces farmers’ reliance on chemicals that degrade soil quality. Heifer’s AYuTe Africa Challenge provided funding and mentorship that helped him scale his business and deliver innovation to more rural farmers and communities.

Social Capital

In Guatemala, the women of the ADIRA cooperative turned raw cacao into artisan chocolate — and collaboration into opportunity. By working together with a shared purpose, they cultivated trust that fueled income generation and advanced equity within their cooperative and beyond.

Livestock Development

Through the Milky Way Signature Program in Nepal, farmers tapped into the productivity of Korean Holstein heifers, which yield up to three times more milk than local breeds. Training on nutrition, hygiene and animal care kept their new dairy cattle healthy and maximized milk production so families could earn more income.

Environmental Stewardship

In Honduras, Heifer field technicians like Marcial Gavarrete worked with local cattle farmers to lead Farmer Field Schools, which provide peer-led training on regenerative ranching. Through the Field School, farmers in the community adopted techniques such as rotational grazing and reforestation to restore degraded land and safeguard ecosystems — a win-win for people and the planet.
